Why Japan is an Underrated Powerhouse for Indian Students
Japan combines world-class universities, cutting-edge research, low tuition at national universities (around JPY 535,800/year), one of the most generous government scholarships in the world (MEXT), and a labour market actively seeking foreign talent in engineering, IT, automotive, AI, robotics and biotech.
MEXT Scholarship and Other Funding
The MEXT Scholarship from the Japanese Government is one of the most generous fully-funded scholarships in the world. It covers full tuition, monthly living stipend, round-trip airfare, and visa fees. Two main routes: Embassy Recommendation (apply via the Japanese Embassy in New Delhi each spring) and University Recommendation (apply through partner universities).
Student Visa, Working Rights and Post-Study Career
On a student visa, you can work up to 28 hours/week during semester and 40 hours/week during long breaks. After graduation, you can switch to a Designated Activities visa (job-search visa) for up to 1 year. Once you secure relevant employment, the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa allows long-term work.
Total INR investment for a 2-year Masters at a national Japanese university (without scholarship) is typically around 20-35 lakh. With a MEXT scholarship or tuition waiver, the out-of-pocket amount can drop drastically.
Frequently Asked Questions
